Following the assault of a traffic policewoman by an alleged Shiv Sena worker, the Mumbai traffic police conducted training and self-defence sessions for its women constables in Thane on Saturday.

The policewomen were taught how to respond to specific situations. They were also taught karate as a means of self-defence. The joint commissioner of traffic police has asked all women traffic constables to write down the specific problems faced by them while on duty and has assured them of solutions for the same.

Following the incident, the Mumbai traffic police took serious note of it which led to the joint commissioner asking women cops to write down their problems and also arranging the special training session.

“The self-defence workshop was necessary for efficient discharge of duty in the wake of frequent incidents of eve-teasing and assaults on women constables,” said an officer who was imparting the training.

“It is also necessary to teach them how to react to rude commuters. Most of the time, constables feel offended and but we have given them an idea on how to deal with such people. The mantra will be to keep calm and be confident. Now all the women in the force have written down their problems which have been forwarded to our joint CP. A decision on how to improve facilities for them will be taken soon,” he further said.

An alleged Shiv Sena worker assaulted a traffic woman constable in public on Thursday around 11 am. The police has pressed charges of molestation against the accused Shashikant Kalgude.

The video from a CCTV camera, which went viral, shows that Kalgude who was driving a Scorpio on the main junction near the Thane Municipal Corporation, was on the phone when the policewoman stopped him. He came out of the car and slapped the woman at least six times.
