The Thane unit of the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has trapped two policemen from neighbouring Gujarat state along with their aide who as part of bribe enjoyed a stay in a hotel, food, free ride and cash from the complainant to file a favourable report in the court. All the three accused have been arrested and will be produced before a magistrate’s court.

Additional CP, Dattatray Karale, of Thane ACB said “Since the crime took place in our jurisdiction we will investigate and file the chargesheet against them.” According to the officials from Thane ACB unit, the complainant is a 44-year-old man who is a resident of Mumbra in Thane district. The accused are identified as Wasim Khan Ibrahim Khan Pathan (27), a police constable (Class III) from Nadiyad town police station in Gujarat, Sanabhai Punabhai Sodaparmar (54), a head constable from the same police station and Mustakeen Sattarbhai Vora (22), a private driver.

The complainant based on his wife’s complaint was booked by Nadiyad town police station under section 498 A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 406 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. The accused was arrested and was out on bail in this case.

“A court in Gujarat had asked the local police to re-investigate the case and file a report in the matter. The two constables were demanding bribe from the accused in this case to file a report in his favour before the court. The accused quietly approached us after which we verified his complaint and went ahead with the trap. The three accused had demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from the complainant in our case.”

The accused Vora accepted a bribe of Rs 91,000 on behalf of the two constables. During the course of the investigation the ACB has ascertained that the two constables spent two days in a hotel.

The bill of the hotel including the food bill came up to Rs 12,500, which was paid by the complainant. Further, another Rs 9,000 was spent by him on fuel to escort the constables in his car from Gujarat. The complainant spent another Rs 3,500 on them with his credit card. He also paid for their food and beverages on their ride from Gujarat.
