The Goregaon police on Sunday night arrested a 19-year-old youth, after he allegedly assaulted an on-duty traffic constable on the road.

The accused, Rohit Mishra, hails from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and had come to Mumbai for a visit a week ago. A police official, on condition of anonymity, told The Asian Age that they had learned that Mishra is mentally unstable and were verifying the claims while the probe is underway.

On Sunday night, Mishra, was riding pillion on an acquaintance’s motorcycle when constable Kamlesh Shendge (32), at Goregaon, noticed the motorcyclist riding on a footpath. Mr Shendge stopped the motorcyclist and demanded to see his licence, to which, Mishra got very angry and manhandled him.

PI from Goregaon police station, Rajendra Suryavanshi, said that Mishra called someone from his cellphone and asked Mr Shendge to speak to the man on the line. However, Mr Shendge refused to do so. Meanwhile, the motorcyclist was willing to produce his licence but Mishra started arguing with Mr Shendge, pulled at his uniform and manhandled him. “Mr Shendge is attached to the Malad traffic police outpost,” said Mr Suryavanshi.

When Mishra attacked Mr Shendge, his colleagues came to his rescue and nabbed Mishra. They later took him to Goregaon police station, where they booked him for assault or using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty.
