The Mumbai crime branch team that will be visiting Indonesia to bring back arrested gangster Chhota Rajan faces a threat there and local authorities have been requested to ensure the safety of its members.

A senior officer privy to the development said on Friday, “We have received some inputs that the team which would go to Indonesia to bring back Chhota Rajan also faces threat perception (like the gangster) and we are being extra vigilant in this matter.”

“We have shared our concerns with the host country and urged them to ensure safe and smooth passage while departing from there,” he said.

Rajan, one-timed trusted aide of underworld don and terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, was nabbed in the tourist town of Bali early this week.

The 55-year-old gangster faces threat to his life from Dawood, whose men attacked and injured him in a Thailand hotel in September 2000.

Asked when the don is likely to be brought back to India, the officer said, “Nothing can be said as of now. We are awaiting instructions from the home ministry and CBI as well, because the team that will go to Bali will be headed by CBI.” On Thursday, an officer from the crime branch flew to New Delhi to apprise the Union home ministry about criminal cases filed against Rajan in the metropolis.
