Teachers from various organisations joined hands to protest against the apathy of the government towards various issues raised by the teaching and non-teaching staff of schools, junior and degree colleges, technical and polytechnic institutions in the state. Unions and NGOs put aside their differences to come on a single platform to push for nearly 25 demands. Organisations affiliated to the BJP also joined the protest, which is expected to go on till the budget is announced on March 18. Some organisations have also started a chain hunger strike while others have vowed to fast unto death if their demands are not met.
MLC Kapil Patil, who addressed the gathering of nearly 1,000 teachers from different streams, said, “The farmers issue and the teachers issue are two of the main problems faced by the state but nothing is being done about it. We need freedom from the high-handedness of the government and hence we have come together to raise our voice against it,” said Mr Patil.
The organisations that have leant support to the agitation include Citizen Forum for Sanctity in Education, Shikshak Bharati, Shikshak Parishad, Maharashtra State Unaided Schools Association among others. Some of the demands of the agitators include payment of arrears, sanction of approval for unaided schools, action against errant and corrupt officials, among others. The Citizen Forum also raised questions regarding the inaction of government against 342 colleges that are running without proper approval of the DTE, AICTE and MU.
