It’s raining good news for Mumbaikars as far as water supply is concerned. Tansa has become the fourth lake to overflow this monsoon. The water stock has also reached a healthy 11.89 lakh million litres (ML). With still two months of the monsoon remaining, the water supply worries of Mumbaikars till next summer have almost been solved.

Tansa reached its full supply level of 128.36 m at 2.10 am on Tuesday. For the first time in the history of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), three lakes have started overflowing within a span of 24 hours. Vihar lake had crossed the overflow mark on August 1 at 4.20 pm, followed by Modak Sagar lake at 10.28 pm on the same day. Tulsi was the first lake to overflow on July 19.

Tansa lake contributes 455 ML of water daily. Interestingly, it had not reached its full supply level last year owing to inadequate rainfall, but consistent rainfall this year means it crossed the overflow mark by the beginning of August itself.

According to civic data, the seven lakes supplying water to the city currently have a stock of 11.86 ML. Mumbai needs 14.5 ML water to last for the entire year.

Of the remaining three lakes, Upper Vaitarana is yet to reach its full supply level by three metres, whereas Bhatsa and Middle Vaitarana are to be filled by five and 6.5 metres respectively.

“With the continuous and heavy rainfall in catchment areas, we are confident that the remaining three lakes would also start overflowing soon,” said A.K. Tawadia, chief hydraulic engineer, BMC.
