The scion of the renowned Talwalkars fitness group, Rahul Bhaskar Talwalkar (44), was arrested from Mumbai and remanded to five days police custody on charges of cheating members in Nashik on Thursday.
The police said that, Talwalkar Fitness Solutions Pvt Ltd had taken annual membership from scores of fitness enthusiasts when it opened a gymnasium in Nashik in 2009. The rates were Rs 18,000 per member per year and life membership for Rs 20,000 after two years of annual membership.
The fitness centre was started in Akruti Apartments near Prasad Mangal Karyalay off the posh Gangapur Road by Rahul Bhaskar Talwalkar, who has been arrested, and Ambar Talwalkar, both residents of Mumbai.
Speaking to The Asian Age on Friday, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) N. Ambika said that based on the complaints received so far the amount of Rs 30 lakh is being investigated.
“This is a preliminary stage and we can’t discuss much. The accused is in police custody and investigations are on. There are about 400 members,” the DCP said.
The fitness centre has been closed for the past few months. The electricity has been disconnected, employees have not been paid their salaries and the rent has not been paid, the police said. Finally, member Ashok Haribesh Singh (42) of Nashik filed a complaint with the Gangapur Road police station. The police said more members are likely to come forward and complaints are likely to increase.
Two months ago, some members had complained to the police that the fitness centre was closed. Talwalkars then started the club for two weeks and before closing it down again.
