Suicide pact: Role of friend to be probed

The Wadala police is investigating if the 16-year-old boy who survived the Vashi suicide pact abetted the death of his 17-year-old friend.

The Wadala police is investigating if the 16-year-old boy who survived the Vashi suicide pact abetted the death of his 17-year-old friend. This comes after the parents of the deceased protested outside the police station on Sunday, alleging police inaction.

Sources said the survivor Nikhil Gaddam (16) is being investigated and if proved guilty will be booked under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code. When contacted, P. Karyakarte, senior inspector, confirmed the development and said that parents of the deceased minor Ruthik Patekar had made the allegation.

“The parents in their statements have made the allegation that their son’s friend abetted his death. In our investigation, we will also be looking at that angle,” he said.

When asked if the investigation into the new allegation had begun, he said, “The boy is suffering from mental trauma and has been admitted in a hospital. On Monday, we took him to a government hospital for a physical check-up and are also looking at all other evidences.”

Parents of Ruthik alleged that Nikhil definitely had a hand in their son’s death. After making this allegation, they protested in front of the police station and did not leave till the police handed them a written assurance that it would arrest the remaining accused in the coming week.

“Our son would not have committed suicide just because somebody shouted at him for smoking.

His friend definitely convinced him to jump off that bridge and then he jumped in a way that he didn’t drown and was rescued. The police should investigate his role thoroughly,” said Ganesh Patekar, Ruthik’s father.

Police sources say that since Nikhil is a minor, the investigation will have to be done carefully.

“Even if his role is proven, arresting him is not a possibility. He will be produced in a court and then sent to a juvenile home,” said a police officer.
