Study material woes of IDOL students continue

Students of the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), University of Mumbai continue to face trouble in getting their study material as the institute is still been unable to prepare the material for some subjects and topics. According to officials while work on preparing the material is on and will be completed by December end, the institute is currently concentrating on providing study material in Marathi.

According to students of MA Part I and II of political science, sociology and history, though the academic year started in September they are yet to get the study material. “Initially students got study material but later when students with late admission approached IDOL for the books they were told that the stock had been exhausted and the new stock would take some time to come,” said Anita, who has enrolled for MA Part I in economics.

While the problem for part I students is temporary and study material will be available as the newly printed stock becomes available, students of part II are at sea as the institute has said that the material is being prepared and is expected to be completed by December. This is the second deadline set by the IDOL after it failed to keep the mid-November deadline after the vice-chancellor Dr Sanjay Deshmukh had asked for a deadline in October.

“We are hopeful of achieving the deadline by providing study material for students who had opted for Marathi medium,” said Dr D. Harichandan, former director of IDOL who is overseeing the study material preparation work.

Adding that nearly 70-80 per cent of the study material in English was ready and available for download on the website, Mr Harichandan agreed there was some mistakes and needed to be corrected for the part II students to be able to study from it.

“Work on some topics and subjects has nearly been completed and is now being proof read and will be going for printing soon, others are yet being prepared and we are hoping for it to be available for distribution by end of December,” said Mr Harichandan.
