The video of a man hurling a dog from a terrace for amusement that went viral a few days ago has prompted students in the city to join hands and work towards expelling all forms of cruelty to animals. The students will work with India Unites For Animals, a citizen’s initiative that aims to end all forms of cruelty and abuse of animals, and get the Animal Welfare Bill (AWB) passed in the Parliament.
The students of Mithibai College have started conducting seminars and awareness programmes, starting September 29, which will go on till January 11, 2017.
India Unites for Animals will also bring in animal welfare officers from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) to speak about the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. The students will also demand that the Animal Welfare Bill drafted in 2014 is presented and passed in the Parliament.
“It was the video of two Chennai students who threw a dog from the terrace for fun that motivated us to come up with this idea,” said Yash Shahani, a student.
An animal welfare officer, “The current law only fines a person Rs 50 or Rs 100 for ill treating animals. The AWB proposes fines starting from Rs 5,000.”
