Unable to cope with the pressure of studies, a 25-year-old industrial engineering student committed suicide on Thursday. The girl, identified as Surbhi Gupta, jumped off a window of her college building. She was rushed to LH Hiranandani Hospital but was declared dead before admission.
Powai police said Ms Gupta was a first-year student of the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Powai, and the incident occurred at around 7.30 am just before she was to appear for an internal exam on Thursday.
-"The deceased had recently joined NITIE, and had got accommodation in the hostel located in the college campus. On Thursday, she left her room on the seventh floor of the hostel with her roommate to appear for an exam scheduled on that day. While on her way, she told her roommate that she had forgotten her keys in the room and asked her to go ahead while she went back to her room to collect them,-" said B.K. Mahadeshwar, senior police inspector, Powai police.
“After reaching the seventh floor, where her room is located, she stood on the panel of the window in the corridor and jumped off.”
Ms Gupta's post-mortem at Rajawadi Hospital revealed that she died due to -"shock and hemorrhage along with multiple injuries to her body”.
Powai police officials said that no suicide note was found on her person but they were talking to her friends and family.
“Our initial probe has revealed that Ms Gupta had confided in her classmates and roommates that she was finding it difficult to cope with the immense syllabus. She was finding it hard to focus and also couldn’t deal with the pressure of studies,” said Mr Mahadeshwar.
Gupta hails from Chennai and had come to Mumbai after finishing her graduation and had got admission to NITIE in the first attempt.
“We recorded statements of her classmates and they said that she was finding it hard to adapt to the studies and the change.-" added Mr Mahadeshwar.
