Taking a lesson from the fire mishap at Girgaum Chowpatty, the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) has laid down strict guidelines for holding any future outdoor events in the city. It has called for ban on fireworks, pyrotechnics and LPG cylinders at such events unless they are handled by experts.
In its report, the MFB has said that concerned ward authorities and organising agency/event management company should follow these guidelines scrupulously for any kind of outdoor event.
The MFB has made several recommendations, which has disallowed use of fireworks and pyrotechnics at the indoor and outdoor events, unless they are operated by trained and authorised persons. Necessary permissions should also be obtained from the explosives department and other competent authorities. In addition, undertakings should be taken from the organiser regarding the use of fireworks or pyrotechnics.
The MFB has also prohibited the use of LPG cylinders near the stage or in the vicinity of the event. If it is allowed they should be installed in a gas cabin located at a suitable safe distance, with a pipeline installed by an approved agency with assembly provided near the origin of supply. Specific permissions of MFB shall be obtained and the compliance to that effect shall be submitted.
Gross violations of norms by the organisers have been found in the fire at Chowpatty. The combustible material stored near the stage spread the fire rapidly. “The guidelines should be followed strictly while holding any outdoor or indoor event, where the use of fireworks, pyrotechnic and cylinders is involved,” said chief fire officer Prabhat Rahangdale.
