The Navi Mumbai Municipal corporation (NMMC) commissioner Tukaram Mundhe on Saturday ordered the police to take strict action against the volunteers at the site of immersion if they extort money from people for Ganesh immersion.
On Saturday evening, Mr Mundhe visited the Ganpati immersion at Vashi Talav, when he found some volunteers extorting money from residents for their idol immersion.
One of the police officials who was present at the site said, “The commissioner immediately gave an order to police officials to take strict action against volunteers who extort money from the residents. For almost two hours, immersion was closed due to an argument on the same issue between volunteers and NMMC officials. It later resumed on the condition of there being no extortion from the people.”
Another source said, “The commissioner stopped the immersion and said that if NMMC is giving volunteers fixed payment for their immersion work then they cannot take extra money from residents again. It’s extortion.”
