Hundreds of students of the 1.45 lakh undergraduate and postgraduate students who received their convocation certificates recently have complained of numerous mistakes in their names as a result of which they will have to pay again for getting the mistakes rectified. The students have approached former senate members who say that the university should make the corrections without any charges. The university officials have however claimed that the colleges are guilty and would be fined for not verifying the names of students before the certificates were printed. The mistakes included names being wrongly spelt in both English and Devnagari scripts. In charge controller of examination Deepak Wasave said that the university was not to be blamed for the gaffes. “A month before the certificates were sent for printing we had sent a list of names and asked colleges to check the spellings and submit rectifications. If the mistakes have still crept into the certificates then it is the mistake of colleges and they will be fined,” said Mr Wasave.

College principals however said the university only sent a list of undergraduate students and the mistakes have occurred in the names of postgraduate students. “We sent the rectifications for undergraduate students but we did not receive the list for postgraduate students,” said the principal of a college in the eastern suburbs.

Dr M.A. Khan, registrar, MU, said “The mistakes in certificates will have to be rectified as per the norms and there will not be any exception. Students are expected to reapply for changes to the certificate,” said Mr Khan.
