Speed limit up by 20-30kmph
The Mumbai police has decided to increase the speed limit on many important roads in the city. The new decision will be applicable from Friday midnight under which maximum speed limit for vehicles on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Eastern Freeway, Eastern and Western Express Highway, Sion-Panvel Highway , Sion-Chembur Link Road and at Marine Drive has been increased by 20-30kmph. Apart from this, while taking turn, vehicles can now drive at a speed of maximum 40kmph, which was 30kmph earlier.
According to this order, you can drive on the road abutting Marine Drive at a speed of 60kmph, which was 40kmph earlier. Likewise on Eastern Freeway, Eastern and Western Express Highway, Sion-Panvel Highway and Sion-Chembur Link Road the speed limit has been increased to 80kmph from 50kmph.
Commenting on the revised rule, a top official from the Mumbai police traffic department said, “To prevent danger, obstruction and inconvenience these new guidelines has been issued.”
According to this order, parking or halting of vehicles on the entire stretch of the sea link at both the bounds is not allowed. The officer commenting on the same said, “We have seen cases where people committed suicide by jumping from the sea link and hence this provision has been made.”
On January 24, 2015, a man (aged around 27) ended his life by jumping off the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. On Sept. 1, 2014, 45-year-old Vikram Shirish Vasudev committed suicide by jumping off the sea link from its north-bound lane. On Aug. 30, Vikas Jhore, 34, an employee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, jumped off the sea link in front of his wife. A day before, 65-year-old Lalchand Rathod allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the sea link.
