Around 150 students from various universities in the city as well as professionals went on a solidarity march from CST to Azad Maidan on Tuesday evening in support of the protesting Jawaharlal Nehru University students in New Delhi.

Dilnaz, one of the protestors, said the march was not just for JNU students but in solidarity with the victims of all the atrocities taking place against the marginalised section of the societies.

She said it was also in support of dalit PhD scholar at the University of Hyderabad, Rohith Vemula, who committed suicide.

Dilnaz further added that while handing out their pamphlets to members of the public, some came up to them and told them that people like JNU Student Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who has been arrested, deserved to be thrown in jail.

“People like Kanhaiya and Soni Sori, an adivasi activist who was earlier jailed on fake charges for fighting for others’ rights. Some of the people were angry with us for supporting Kanhaiya, which is okay. As long as they are having a dialogue with us and not doing what has been done in Delhi,” she added.

Sharon Fernandes, an author who took part in the solidarity march, said, “I have basically come out in support.” she said
