Slap ESMA on striking doctors: Legislative Council Chairman

State Legislative Council chairman Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar has urged the state government to explore the possibility of slapping the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against JJ hospital doctor

State Legislative Council chairman Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar has urged the state government to explore the possibility of slapping the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against JJ hospital doctors, who are on indefinite strike protesting the dean.

“There are no signs that the indefinite strike launched by the doctors of the JJ Hospital will come to an end. The state government should take strict measures to break the strike. If possible, it should impose ESMA against the agitating doctors,” said the Council Chairman on Thursday.

The issue was raised by the senior NCP legislator Sunil Tatkare, who said the doctors’ strike at JJ Hospital has been going on for the past six days.

A couple of days ago, medical education minister Vinod Tawde had assured to find a solution on the strike issue. Instead of providing solace to patients, the state government is favouring the doctors, Mr Tatkare said.

Speaking on this, Mr Naik-Nimbalkar said, “The medical service is an essential service. It is expected that strike should end amicably. If not, the state government should take strict measures to break the strike. As the patients are suffering, the government should look after their interest instead of doctors.”
