Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis declared on Wednesday that traffic constable Vilas Shinde — who died in the line of duty — will be declared a martyr and that his family would be provided with financial assistance. The CM, along with Minister of State (Home) Deepak Kesarkar, visited the family of the deceased policeman on Wednesday evening.

Shinde was battling for his life since August 23 after two people attacked him for hauling them up for driving without proper papers. He was hit on the head with a wooden plank and suffered grievous head injuries, leading to his demise on Wednesday.

The state conveyed its condolences to the aggrieved family and also announced financial assistance for them. The CM assured a government job to one of the family members. The state also announced Rs 25 lakh as compensation for the family.

Shinde, who stayed at BDD chawl in Worli, is survived by his wife and two children. During his visit to the locality, the CM had to face the anger of the locals and Shinde’s neighbours. The residents demanded that the accused be awarded the death penalty. “Many people protested and shouted slogans demanding justice for Shinde when the CM reached his area. While the CM wanted to speak to the crowd and pacify them, their growing anger made him leave within a few minutes,” said a resident.

Meanwhile, in a heartfelt gesture, every traffic policeman in the city has decided to pledge one day’s salary to the family, which adds up to roughly Rs 30-35 lakh.

Shinde’s body was taken to his home from Cooper Hospital on Wednesday. His last rites will be performed in his native place of Shirgaon in Satara on Thursday.
