With a view to help students decide on their choice of vocation after SSC, the state government has started a skill-assessment initiative wherein students will be made to undertake the assessment after which they will be guided towards the field of study and vocation that they are likely to excel in. The government resolution issued earlier in the week has laid down a detailed programme that will be implemented at the school level and SSC students have to undergo the test after the completion of their board exams.

According to the resolution, after SSC not only students but also their parents are confused about the choice of study or vocation that the student needs to take up. “In the absence of a proper system, students and parents end up opting for the wrong vocation which in the end results in drop outs as well as waste of time, energy and resources,” said the resolution.

The order further elaborates on the setting up of various groups and committees that will undertake the skill-assessment programmes and help students identify the vocation most suited to them. However, in the absence of a ready programme to implement, the government has decided to conduct the same through the online method. Post-assessment counseling would, however, be done by the school authorities who will convey the recommendations to students and their parents at the same time.

“All school committees will need to get skill-assessment software made by psychologists and experts. While a set format would be ideal for all students and schools, psychologists could make different software depending on the peculiar nature and need of the student population in different areas,” said an official from the school education department. Wherever online assessment is not possible the same has to be done offline, added the official.

The order has also asked schools and institutions to refer students to a helpline number that has to be started by the school so that students can take recourse if the recommended vocation is not of their choice or liking.
