The Western Railway (WR) on Tuesday saw 16 cancellations and over 30 trains delayed after a signal failed near Kandivali, bringing trains on all four lines at a standstill for about 25 minutes.

The problem occurred between 1. 45 pm and 2.10 pm. The cancelled services included eight towards Churchgate and eight towards Virar. Commuters like 25-year-old Shrutika Maheshwari was stuck at Dadar for almost half-an-hour because of the disruption. “I wanted to travel from Dadar to Grant Road station, which is a short distance, but I was frustrated when the trains were running late. Also, the punctuality on our line has been dismal for more than a year as a result of which I have been considering using carpool to get to work,” she said.

Another commuter, Aaakanksha Bajpai (25) who was at Churchgate when the signal failed said, “I wanted to go to Andheri and I reached Churchgate around 3 pm but services were not available. Also, the station was extremely crowded. I was able to board a train after almost half an hour,” she said.

WR’s chief public relations officer Ravindra Bhakar said that the issue was dealt with swiftly. “As soon as we were informed about the failure, we got to the panel and fixed it. But the disruptions did affect all the four lines at the same point of time,” he said.

The WR has 1,205 services that are operated between Churchgate and Dahanu.
