After resigning from the post of advocate-general of Maharashtra following the controversy of statehood for Marathwada, advocate Shreehari Aney received a warm welcome in Nagpur on Saturday morning. Mr Aney placed a garland on the statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and addressed the gathering, reiterating his stand about separate Vidarbha and Marathwada states.
“I am happy that I am back in Vidarbha. We must plan what is to be done to separate the region,” he said. Alleging that western Maharashtra was grabbing all the money meant for Vidarbha, Mr Aney said it was the reason the demand for a separate Vidarbha state was met with opposition. “They (western Maharashtra) will not get money after carving out a Vidarbha state and therefore they oppose the idea of a separate state. Right from Yashwantrao Chavan to Prithviraj Chavan, all were biased towards Vidarbha and have done injustice to the region,” Mr Aney said in a rally conducted to welcome him.
Doubting BJP’s stand on a separate state, Mr Aney reminded that the BJP party got maximum seats in Vidarbha by promising a separate state. “However, if fruits of power are to be enjoyed, all-inclusive politics has to be played. The BJP leadership and (chief minister Devendra) Fadnavis are exactly in the same dilemma. But, the BJP government is at the Centre, as well as the state and it has promised a separate Vidarbha. If they don’t succeed it will be their failure. The party will find it hard to regain power in the future. We will be appealing to all, including all party leaders to come together for a separate state,” Mr Aney said.
Mr Aney had to resign last week after his statement on carving out a separate Marathwada state offended many, including Shiv Sena. The Sena leaders warned of an agitation. The issue rocked the state Assembly after Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP together attacked the BJP. Bowing to the mounting pressure, the BJP had Mr Aney resign from his post as A-G. Mr Aney’s earlier controversial stand on separate Vidarbha is well known.
