A ration shop owner and his wife were arrested by Dindoshi police on Sunday night in connection with a murder that occurred a fortnight ago. The deceased Aashish Gupta’s father told the police that he suspected that Manoj Kumar Rampyare Gupta (47) and his wife Shivkumari Gupta (45) were behind the death of his son, who was working as a servant in the couple’s ration shop for the past seven years.
The police said that Aashish, on January 15, went to Cooper Hospital, Vile Parle, to admit himself. A doctor from Cooper told the police in his statement, “Aashish appeared fine but informed the doctor on duty that he had visited a few small clinics and the Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Centre in Borivali earlier and was provided a few medicines there. However, he continued to feel unbearable pain, which is why he decided to visit Cooper.”
Immediately after being admitted, doctors did an X-ray and C.T. scan; however Aashish died within a few hours on the same day. Later, Aashish’s medical reports revealed that he was suffering severe, mulitiple injuries and internal bleeding and the cause of his death was also the multiple injuries. Subsequently, the Dindoshi police was informed.
Police said that while discussing the motive behind Aashish’s murder, his father told them that Manoj and Shivkumari were not financially sound and had borrowed a lot of money from several people. Unable to return the money borrowed, they told Aashish to borrow more money from different people. After a while, these people began asking Aashish to return their money. Aashish often approached the couple, asking them for money to return to these people. This upset the husband-wife duo.
Manoj and Shivkumari were produced in court on Monday and the court remanded them to police custody. Further investigation is underway.
