Shivaji Maharaj goes from warrior to management guru

Education minister Vinod Tawde announced the inclusion of a chapter on the management skills of Chhatrapati Shivaji in the Class 4 history textbooks of state board-run schools on the occasion of Shivaji Jayanti on Friday. The chapter will be added from the next academic year and will portray Shivaji as a management guru and not a warrior anymore.
“Until now students have learnt about Shivaji Maharaj — the warrior king in their textbooks. But Shivaji Maharaj was also a good management guru, and students will get to know all about that in this particular chapter. His work in the areas of water conservation, water distribution, forest conservation among others are examples of Shivaji Maharaj’s management skills in those times,” said Mr Tawde. The decision to include the said chapter was announced earlier in January by Mr Tawde during the inauguration of an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Maharashtra State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research — Balbharti. The textbook will also see a change in the name of the chapter ‘Uprising of 1857’, which will henceforth be called ‘Freedom struggle of 1857’. “The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has already suggested these changes but this has not been reflected in the textbook of the State board. Now these changes will be implemented from the next academic year,” said Tawde.
