Shiv Sena wants full-time home minister

In the backdrop of recent attacks on police officers in the state, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has reiterated his demand for a full-time home minister.

In the backdrop of recent attacks on police officers in the state, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has reiterated his demand for a full-time home minister. He met chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday and expressed concern over the growing attacks on policemen.

“The CM is doing a good job. But he is burdened with too much work. Hence, there should be a full-time home minister,” said Mr Thackeray, who was accompanied by a delegation of families of police personnel during the meeting with Mr Fadnavis.

The Sena chief demanded strict action against those who are involved in assault cases against policemen. He said that stringent action should be taken against those who are involved in the attempted drowning of a policeman during the immersion of a Ganesh idol in Kalyan in Thane district. “In the last few days, attacks on policemen have been rising. If the police itself is unsafe in the state, how would it be able to protect the common man Due to the attacks, the families of police officers are living in fear. A message should be given that the government belongs to the police too,” he said.

“I think the home department needs a separate minister to check attacks on the police. I demanded three things from the CM — safety of cops in the state, proper implementation of law, and strict punishment to attackers,” said the Sena president.

Despite having cordial relations with the CM, who also holds the home portfolio, Mr Thackeray has been vocal on his demand for a separate home minister for some time now. “We are not demanding that there should be a separate home minister merely because we have been asking for one. The police, society and the state want a full-time minister, a home minister who can function efficiently,” said Mr Thackeray.

During the meeting, the CM said a committee would be formed to address issues related to policemen and their families. Their family members will be included in this committee, he said.

Mr Thackeray, who met the CM at his official residence, was accompanied by Sena ministers.
