Differences in the Shiv Sena and the BJP — the ruling parties in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) — have again come to the fore with the former slamming a move that will allow up to 25 trees to be cut after taking just the municipal commissioner’s permission and without tabling a proposal for the same.
However, the BJP has supported the proposal, saying it will help in development works. The proposal tabled in the tree authority says that there is no need to take permission from the tree authority for cutting less than 25 trees for development works. The proposal says they can be hacked only by taking permission from the municipal commissioner.
However, Sena has said that this is a violation of corporators’ rights. Raising the issue in the civic standing committee meeting, group leader Trishna Vishwasrao said that the clause is already included in the manual for revised building proposal sanctions a few days back.
“The rule has been made without taking corporators and tree authority into confidence. The civic administration is trying to curtail rights of corporators,” said Ms Vishwasrao.
However, the BJP and the Samajwadi Party supported the move. “How many tree cutting proposals have been rejected by the ruling party before We should think out of the box for the development works,” said BJP group leader Manoj Kotak.
If the commissioner is allowing tree cutting for development works, then we should allow him to do so, said SP corporator Rais Shaikh.
