Shiv Sena, with the help of MNS, has once again created hurdles in BJP’s pet project of ‘Ease of Doing Business’, by opposing the proposal of giving rights to the municipal commissioner to allow cutting of 25 trees for development works. Instead, they have proposed that the tree authority meeting should be held every fortnight to decide on such tree cutting proposals.
As a part of ‘Ease of Doing Business’ measures, the BMC had proposed that there is no need to take permission from the civic tree authority to cut a minimum of 25 trees for development. They can be removed with the consent of municipal commissioner, who also heads the tree authority. While the BJP had supported the proposal, the Sena had opposed it, saying that this was a violation of corporators’ rights.
In the tree authority meeting on Monday, the MNS supported Sena’s stand again. Party group lead leader Sandeep Deshpande said, “If the BMC thinks development works are held up due to long gaps between tree authority meetings, instead of giving rights to municipal commissioner, the meeting should be held every 15 days.”
The BJP corporators staged a walkout on the proposal of cutting and transplantation of trees for the expansion project of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and construction projects of Godrej Developers. For the airport project, it has been proposed to cut 96 trees and transplant 42 trees, whereas 60 trees are proposed to be transplanted for the Godrej project.
