Shiv Sena will celebrate its golden jubilee in a spectacular ceremony in Goregaon on Sunday where the party chief Uddhav Thackeray is expected to blow the bugle for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls. Though the Shiv Sena has not cleared its stand over whether it will snap ties with BJP and face the BMC polls alone, the party workers have already started preparations to go it alone.
Recalling the formation of the party on June 19, 1966, MP Arvind Sawant said the Sena was meant to fight injustice. “We fought for sons of soils, labourers, Hindus, unemployed, farmers and the party will continue its battle to get justice for the needy,” said Mr Sawant, has been in the party from the day of its formation.
Praising the party supremo late Bal Thackeray, Mr Sawant said he was a selfless man. “Balasaheb never acquired any post for himself but always gave opportunities to Shiv Sainiks,” he added.
On the jubilee celebration, Mr Sawant said that the party would retrospect on its political journey and decide its course on Sunday.
A Shiv Sena functionary said that the party workers expect Uddhav Thackeray to make his stand clear on ongoing political issues and the party’s alliance with BJP. “We want Uddhavji to speak up openly about politics and BJP. The BMC polls are also coming closer and we have already started our work. We just need their guidance and blessings,” the functionary said.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Nilam Gorhe said now that the party is in the government, its functioning style has changed a little. “We are acting as a medium between the government and the public. We are not only raising local problems but also working on national issues. The party has evolved in the last 50 years but with an aim to work for the people,” she said.
The Sena leader hoped that Uddhav Thackeray would bring enthusiasm in the party. “Uddhavji would bring enthusiasm in the party like Balasaheb used to do. He will guide us on strengthening the party and working towards a common goal,” Ms Gorhe said.
