A local magistrate court in Mumbai on Monday extended judicial custody of Peter Mukerjea till January 11 in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case.

Special CBI counsel Kavita Patil on Monday informed the magistrate, R.V. Adone, that Peter could not be brought to court from Arthur Road Jail due to some issues pertaining to lack of staff. She requested the magistrate to extend Peter’s judicial custody as the investigation was in a crucial stage.

The magistrate extended Peter’s judicial custody for another 14 days in the presence of his lawyer Kushal Mor.

The court had allowed the application of the former media baron to have home-made food in prison under proper supervision of jail superintendent considering that he was a senior citizen having heart ailments and has been taking medicines to lower his cholesterol.

Peter, the second husband of Indrani, was arrested on November 19 this year for his alleged role in the murder case and was remanded to judicial custody on last date of hearing. He has been kept at the high-security Arthur Road Jail where two other accused in the case — Indrani’s former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamwar Rai — are also lodged. Sheena is Indrani’s daughter from an earlier relationship.

The prosecution’s case is that all these persons were involved in Sheena’s murder and Peter was also aware about it. The CBI had also taken Peter to Delhi to conduct a polygraph test on him. The police have claimed that Sheena was allegedly strangled in a car and then her body was burnt and dumped in a forest in Raigad, about 84 km from Mumbai.
