Senior PI arrested for bribe, hospitalised
Subhash Chavan (58), the senior police inspector of MHB police station who was arrested by Anti-Corruption Bureau for allegedly taking bribe, was supposed to be produced before the court for remand on Wednesday. However, he suddenly fell sick and was hospitalised, following which the judge has asked the police to produce him before the court as soon as he is discharged by the medical officer.
After arrest the accused was supposed to be produced before the court on Wednesday. However, judge A.S. Mahatme was informed that late in the night the accused had fallen ill. Chavan’s lawyer Mahesh Vaswani told The Asian Age that he met Chavan in the night and he was alright at that time. However, on Wednesday he came to know that he was not well and was rushed to the government run hospital where his blood pressure was found to be very high and he also complained of pain in the chest.
According to police sources, the court has not given the next date when the accused should be produced and the investigating officer would have to take a report from the doctor and produce the accused before the court when he is medically fit. In the meantime he would be considered in police custody and the police cannot keep an accused in its custody for more than 14 days, that too with the court’s permission.
The ACB has claimed that Chavan, who was posted with the MHB police station in northern Mumbai, was supposed to retire from the force after four months, was arrested red-handed while taking bribe of Rs 3 lakh cash from a complainant on Tuesday, for not taking action against his illegal studio plot. The complainant had agreed to pay the amount demanded and had sought time to make arrangements for money, but instead approached the ACB. The ACB verified the complainant’s claims and caught Chavan while he was allegedly accepting the bribe from the complainant.
The ACB on Wednesday conducted a raid at the two BHK home at Marol Naka and recovered 18 imported liquor bottles. They did not find any incriminating evidence from his house.
