The School Bus Owners Association (SBOA) has welcomed the recent direction by the Nagpur bench of the high court to the government to check on the safety measures of school buses but has said the court should also take cognisance of the illegal transport service providers who ply vehicles to ferry school children. SBOA has claimed the concerns for the safety of school children should be holistic and the judiciary should ensure the same is adhered to by all service providers.

Anil Garg, president of SBOA, said, “The regional transport commissioner issued orders to schools across the state to check if safety guidelines for their buses are being implemented.”

Mr Garg said it was unfortunate the transport commissioner issued orders for the organised sector and not for the unorganised sector comprising private vans, autorickshaws and cabs that ferry children.

P.D. Nikam, deputy commissioner, RTO, Mumbai, said, “Schools have to get the vehicles checked between May 1 and 31 from their local RTOs. The checks are free of cost and buses found defaulting the safety norms mentioned in the Motor Vehicle Act school bus policy rules will have to get it rectified and get a recheck done before May 31.” When asked about the private vehicles, he only said the issue would be addressed too.
