A 70-year-old woman died after a driver, ferrying a bus full of school children, lost control on the wheels and allegedly rammed into her in Mulund (east). The Navghar police arrested the accused on the spot before he could abscond.
The deceased was identified as Mangla Rane, a resident of Tata Colony. According to officials, for the past few years, the woman was in the habit of going for a morning walk at the Sambhaji Ground. She would go for the walk at 7 am and return home by 8.30 am.
“Rane had gone for the walk and was returning home when she met with the accident at the Navghar signal.
The school bus driver was taking a turn at the signal when he suddenly spotted the woman. However, he was not able to stop the bus in time and dashed into the elderly woman, who fell on her head and died on the spot.
Passers-by who witnessed the accident immediately informed us. The accused was all ready to flee the accident site, but we managed to arrest him,” said a police official.
The school bus driver has been identified as Bejamin Jabras Nadar (31). He has been in the driving profession for the past 10 years.
He was a driver with the Euro School for the past one year. “At the time of the incident, he was ferrying the school children to school. None of the children were hurt in the accident. We immediately took the elderly woman to Shushrusha Hospital, where she was declared dead owing to her grievous head injury. We have produced the driver in the court, where the judge sent him to judicial custody.
The court granted him bail on a personal bond of Rs 15,000, ” said senior PI of Navghar police station, M. More.
The police said Nadar has been booked under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) under the Indian Penal Code.
In another incident in Mulund, another senior citizen Hemanti Gunjal committed suicide by hanging herself to death. She had left behind a suicide note in which she has claimed that her son and daughter-in-law used to beat her often,” said a policeman. “Her daughter-in-law was having an affair with her neighbour, and when she came to know about it, she informed her son. However, he started assaulting her. We are investigating the case,” said an official.
