The Mumbai division office of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has said that it would investigate an incident where four students had allegedly beaten up the principal of a school at Bhiwandi as he did not allow them to copy during the SSC exams that got over on March 28. The issue was raised by MLC Ramnath Mote on Monday after the principal lodged a complaint with the Bhiwandi police against unknown students.
According to police officials, the principal lodged a complaint against four unknown students after they roughed him up outside the school premises on Saturday. In the complaint, the principal said that the assailants were young and could have assaulted him as he had been strict and did not allow any malpractices during the SSC board exams that started on March 1 and got over on March 28. The principal said he could not ascertain the identity of the students.
The police said that they were investigating the issue and conducting inquiries in the area to find out eyewitnesses who knew the identity of any of the students.
While raising the issue in the House, Mr Mote said that the attack on the principal was a grave issue and a thorough inquiry should be held in this regard and the culprits apprehended. “If a principal is beaten up for doing his duty diligently then it would send out a wrong message to other principals. The education department should take steps to ensure that such incidents are not repeated and increase the security of the principals,” said Mr Mote.
When asked about the incident, Dattatray Jagtap, Mumbai division chairman of MSBSHSE, said they were investigating the issue and would take stringent steps against the students who were involved in the attack. “If the attackers are identified as students who had appeared for the SSC board exams, they could be barred from appearing from future exams as per the provisions of the board rules. It would be extremely unfortunate if the attackers turn out to be SSC students who resorted to assaulting the principal for doing his duty,” said Mr Jagtap.
