Following a notice sent by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the RPG Art Foundation on Tuesday demolished an installation which had been put up as a tribute to cricketer Sachin Tendulkar at Marine Drive.
The foundation has also been denied permission to set up a installation honouring dabbawallas at the Metro Junction, civic officials said.
The civic body had sent a notice to the foundation authorities asking them to remove the metal artwork within 24 hours, failing to which it had threatened to remove it itself.
Following this, the foundation started the process of removing the sculpture by covering it with plastic sheets. The sculpture will now be reportedly installed at Bandra.
According to the civic officials, the RPG Art Foundation has set up installations across the city to pay tribute to many celebrities from various fields. The civic ward authorities had initially given it the permission for the installation to be set up. However, local residents had raised objections with the BMC and the heritage committee, demanding its removal. “Taking note of their complaints, the heritage committee denied permission to the foundation for the installation. So, the A-ward office issued notice to the foundation to remove the installation. However, as it was not heeded, the civic body sent a second notice to the foundation asking it to remove it within 24 hours,” said A ward assistant commissioner Kiran Dighavkar.
