RPF identifies 39 spots with rampant trespassing

The Railway Police Force (RPF) has identified trespassing holes along the Western Railway (WR) like Jogeshwari, Kandivali, Malad that need to be plugged. The WR has been trying to curb trespassing by improving patrolling in these areas and have also requested the WR authorities to build foot over-bridges in selected areas.

In a survey conducted by RPF a month ago, 39 spots with rampant trespassing were observed. “The survey is ongoing and we have identified 31 more of these areas where we need to plug these holes with either boundary walls or foot-over-bridges. One of spots located at Kandivali is going to be soon taken care of as the foot-over-bridge there is soon to be completed,” said RPF senior divisional security commissioner, Anand Vijay Jha.

The WR has been allocated funds for much needed foot over-bridges for the year 2016-17 at various locations in Lower Parel, Elphinstone Road, Goregaon, Bandra, Vasai Road, Nallasopara and Virar.

“We have also asked the WR authorities to try and speed up works on these spots so that we can somehow curb the number of deaths due to trespassing,” said Mr Jha.

WR has identified trespassing and chain pulling as one of the major reasons for delays, the secondary restrictions are due to the various speed restrictions at other spots along the WR, seen at Bandra, Andheri and Virar.

In a similar survey by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) 22 spots had been identified as seeing the highest number of deaths on both the WR and the Central Railway (CR).
