Road repairs 24X7; activists slam move
Road repair works will now be carried out 24x7 in the island city areas.
Road repair works will now be carried out 24x7 in the island city areas. The traffic department has given permission to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to perform these works, which were earlier done only during nighttime. However, citizen activists have slammed this move saying it will create chaos on city roads.
According to civic officials, the traffic department had earlier allowed road repair works in the island city area only during the nighttime — from 11 pm to 6 am. Due to this, these works used to take a longer time to complete. However, the traffic department has now given its nod to carry out road repairs works throughout the day.
Civic officials have claimed that this will expedite the road repair works and they can be finished in a shorter period.
The traffic department has allowed to carry out 24x7 road repair works in 26 island city areas like Tardeo, Malabar Hill, Pydhonie, Kalbadevi, Byculla, Nagpada, Matunga, Bhoiwada, Wadala, Worli, Mahim and Colaba.
“Though road repair works will be done during the entire day, the contractors have been asked to perform these works without creating trouble for traffic movement and following noise pollution rules,” said a senior civic official.
However, citizen activists have questioned the wisdom behind this move. “Even with the current nighttime repair works, we have traffic snarls on every major road of the city. I shudder to think what will happen if the BMC carries out repair works for the entire day,” said James John Koreth from AGNI.
“Before giving the permission has the traffic department done any survey of how many vehicles ply on these roads every day Do they have enough manpower to manage the traffic if repair works are performed for the entire day If not, we will have to be ready for total chaos on city roads,” he added.
