Rigid builders as bad as cow vigilantes: Shiv Sena

Applauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi for talking tough against cow vigilantes, the Shiv Sena on Monday urged him to take strict action against builders in Mumbai who discriminate against non-vegetarians by refusing to sell them flats. The Sena also claimed that the cow vigilantes have become bolder in the past two years.

The issue of private builders denying flats to non-vegetarians has been a bone of contention in Mumbai. All political parties, except for the BJP, have sought action against such builders. However, the BJP-led state government has remained mum on the issue.

A day after the PM lashed out at “fake cow protectors”, an editorial in Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana said, “Some builders in Mumbai are creating separate islands for vegetarians, and they are no different from the so-called cow vigilantes. They are denying houses to non-vegetarians. This is also an atrocity and the PM should initiate strong action against such people. What to eat is everybody’s individual choice. There should not be any problem as long as people are respecting each other’s religious sentiments.”

The PM has denounced cow vigilantes for trying to create “tension and conflict” in the society and has asked states to take stringent action against them.

Calling it a bold statement by the PM, the Saamana edit said, “We will not be surprised if the prime minister has to face the wrath of the believers of Hindutva for his comments on cow vigilantes.”

The Shiv Sena said it was “surprising” that violence was taking place in the name of cow protection in a land where aged parents are sent to old age homes, the girl child is killed in the womb of mothers and “unwanted” newborns are thrown into dustbins.

However, the party also questioned the increasing nuisance value of cow vigilantes after the BJP came to power two years ago. “The voice of the cow vigilantes was weak during the Congress’ rule and there was no way that it could be heard by those in power. A law banning beef could not be put in place then. Our question to the PM is, why are people, who in the name of cow protection are carrying out illegal activities, cropping up in the last two years,” the editorial said.
