Following the murder of a 59-year-old woman Vanita Menan Saturday evening, residents of the Nilkamal society in Borivali (west), where the deceased lived, have decided to come together and appoint a senior lawyer to fight the case against the accused.
According to locals, the accused Rajesh Ramjibhai Rathod (51) is a repeat offender. He had attacked the society chairman also in the past and had been imprisoned for nine months in that case. He was upset because his brother sold a flat in the society and the deceased was the tenant of the new owner of the flat.
On Saturday, at about 6.30 pm when the mother-daughter duo, came from the market, Rathod, followed them till their flat, and tried to stab Vanita. Scared, Vanita tried to enter the house of a neighbour but Rathod pulled her by her hair and stabbed her in the stomach. He did not attack Pooja, who was crying for help. Later the neighbours called the police. Vanita was taken to Shatabdi hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
In between this, Rathod himself went to the police station and surrendered. On Sunday he was produced in court and remanded in police custody till January 27.
According to sources, the deceased Vanita was a widow, and was working in Mogaveera bank branch of Goregaon and her daughter Pooja (25) is studying CA. They had moved into the flat in ‘A’ wing last year on rent.
This flat originally belonged to a Ram Bhatiya, who had purchased it from Rathod’s brother. Rathod who stays in the ‘B’ wing was not happy with this deal and would often curse Vanita saying his brother had sold the flat illegally.
