Tension prevailed in Malvani after a woman, infamous for assaulting people and trespassing on the area, was found dead in a pool of blood outside her house in Mambada, Azami Nagar at about 5.30 am on Saturday. The deceased, Mumtaz Begum Rashid Sheikh aka Mamta Baljit Singh Tejkaur Netain (53), had apparently been attacked with a sharp-edged weapon. The police registered a case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC. The case is being investigated.
Malvani police officials said Netain had been externed by police since the past two months and owing to her activities, prohibited from entering Mumbai and Thane. Still, she would often visit her Malvani house. Several cases of assault, trespass and intrusion had been registered against her and she had even been imprisoned in Byculla jail.
Senior police officials said Netain had been externed by the police three times, once in 1998, again in 2009, and yet again since the past two months. She was also charged under Section 142 for visiting an area after being prohibited. She was facing three cases of Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA Act) for illegal intrusion on government property and six cases of extortion. She was notorious for extortion in Malvani. She also had 13 cases of assault registered against her.
An official said, “Netain had a habit of brushing her teeth outside her house and looking at the time of the incident, it appears she came out to brush her teeth and someone attacked her on the back of her head with a sharp blade-like weapon.”
