Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar gets re-elected

Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar, Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) senior leader from the royal family of Satara, was re-elected as the chairman of the state Legislative Council unanimously on Friday.

Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar, Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) senior leader from the royal family of Satara, was re-elected as the chairman of the state Legislative Council unanimously on Friday.

The day also saw 10 newly-elected MLCs and 10 newly-inducted ministers being introduced in the Upper House. The Leader of Opposition and the Leader of the House were announced in the House on Friday.

Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao had called the special session of the state Legislative Council at Vidhan Bhavan as the previous term of Mr Nimbalkar had ended on July 7.

While NCP chief Sharad Pawar approved of Mr Nimbalkar as the House chairman, the Congress assured NCP that it would support Mr Nimbalkar’s candidature.

It was Congress’ group leader Manikrao Thakare who had proposed Mr Nimbalkar for the post while NCP group leader party’s state president Sunil Tatkare seconded it. Another name that was proposed for the post was of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Chandrakant Patil, which was seconded by NCP’s Dhananjay Munde. Meanwhile, the third proposal came from Shiv Sena’s Dr Nilam Gorhe and was seconded by NCP’s Prabhakar Ghadage.

Peasants and Workers Party of India’s Jayant Patil was on chair as pro-tem chairman.

After the election, Mr Patil announced the result and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, minister for parliamentary affairs Girish Bapat, Dhanajay Munde and Mr Tatkare escorted Mr Nimbalkar to the chair with honour. Later, as chairman Mr Nimbalkar announced the names of Leader of Opposition and Leader of the House. Mr Munde was re-appointed as LoP and Mr Patil was selected as the leader of the House.

When the business of the House began in the morning, pro-tem chairman Mr Patil gave oath to 10 newly-elected MLCs. Then Mr Fadnavis introduced the newly-inducted ministers to the House.
