As different parts of the state witness light rainfall, drought-hit Maharashtra is set for the Southwest Monsoon showers as per the weather reports. Along with drier regions of the state like Marathwada and Latur, other regions like Pune, Aurangabad and Nashik also welcomed light showers, along with several instances of thunderstorms for over four days. Most importantly, the showers have cooled down the heat wave in the state, which had become worrisome in various regions.
Weather reports have suggested that the presence of an active inter tropical convergence zone in the Indian Ocean has resulted in the Southwest Monsoon to arrive earlier than usual. As the reports earlier had predicted an above normal rainfall at 105 per cent, July is slated to record as much as 289 mm of rainfall. There is also a 35 per cent chance of above normal rainfall in the June-July-August-September period.
K.S. Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, IMD said that they would come up with the Kerala forecast within two weeks that will offer dates when the monsoon would reach the mainland. “After studying the weather pattern in Kerala, we will be able to prepare a Maharashtra forecast. Most probably, the monsoons are supposed to hit Kerala by June 1 and will hit Maharashtra a week later,” said Mr Hosalikar.
