An assistant signal and telecom engineer died after a train ran him over while he was inspecting the track between Kopar and Diva at 11.50 am on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a khalasi working with him has been hospitalised after being involved in the same accident.
The engineer, Navneet Govind Palve (46), was inspecting the digital axle counters (DAC) on the sixth line, along with the khalasi, named Dehu Dhave. While they were on duty, a goods train, which usually do not run on the newly-built sixth lane between Thane and Diva, ran them over. Narendra Patil, the chief public relations officer of Central Railways (CR), said, “We still are unclear about how the incident took place but, yes, we are extremely saddened that Mr Palve lost his life.”
Officials are now waiting for Mr Dhave to give an explanation about the series of events that took place. But the Dombivli resident, admitted in the railway hospital at Kalyan, is in a critical condition.
