Says it can’t implement Swachh Bharat
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi slammed BJP leaders for their failure to maintain the Deonar dumping yard, where fires frequently occur, causing pollution and respiratory ailments.
While visiting the dumping yard on Tuesday, Mr Gandhi also criticised the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project, and said that no proper strategy existed to implement it. “Launching a campaign like Swachh Bharat and acting on it are two different things. There seems to be no strategy to implement it,” said Mr Gandhi while talking to reporter at the ground.
The Gandhi scion, along with AICC general secretary in-charge for Maharashtra Mohan Prakash and Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) chief Sanjay Nirupam, visited the ground to check on its condition.
He also stated that he had met a weeping resident who complained to the Congress vice-president about the pollution that was being caused by fire breakouts. “This dumping ground is a cause of distress for many. It should not be here. Children are suffering from TB people are falling sick. In fact, one child died recently because of it. The Prime Minister and chief minister need to take action. There seems to be no vision to deal with the situation,” Mr Gandhi said.
Every day, more than 1,000 tonnes of waste are deposited at the biggest dumping yard of the city at Deonar. But due to improper segregation of garbage, this often leads to sparks that causes fire breakouts. Huge amount of toxic air pollutants are released from the ground when the dumping yard catches fire.
“This Prime Minister talks about Swachh Bharat. His government is in power here. There is a BJP-Shiv Sena government here and there is cooperation between them... So either the Prime Minister or the chief minister should do something. They should take action,” PTI quoted Mr Gandhi as saying.
