Youth Congress workers in Solapur district named a public toilet after actor Rishi Kapoor in protest against his recent comments about the party. The actor had last week posted a series of tweets slamming the Congress Party for naming important public places like roads, railway stations, airports etc after the Nehrus and Gandhis. However, the Congress leadership in Maharashtra, that is always prompt in criticising hooliganism by Shiv Sena and BJP workers, decided look the other way.
Mr Kapoor, had, in a series of tweets, criticised the Congress for using Nehru and Gandhi family name for various public assets across the nation. Mr Kapoor had tweeted seeking Rajeev Gandhi Bandra Worli Sea Link be named after Lata Mangeshkar or J.R.D. Tata. He went on to say Baap ka maal samajh rakha tha (Congress named public property after the Gandhi family treating it as their own).
Expressing anger against Mr Kapoor’s tweets, Baba Kargule, city president of Congress in Kolhpaur, held a morcha and named a public toilet in the city after the actor. “It is our way of protesting against Mr Kapoor who dared to speak against our leaders,” said Mr Kargule, while speaking with local mediapersons.
Refusing to react over the issue, state Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said that the protests in Solapur were not in sync with the “Congress culture”. “We will not tolerate the way of protest in Solapur undertaken by party workers. We will get information about it,” the Congress spokesperson said. Congress workers had reacted aggressively over Mr Kapoor’s tweet and responded immediately on May 17. Last week, Congress workers even pelted stones at Mr Kapoor’s house in Mumbai.
