The Mumbai unit of the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a police sub-inspector from Central Mumbai who allegedly demanded a bribe to register an FIR over mobile theft so that the complainant could get the phone’s insurance on basis of the document.
Narayan Navle (28), who was arrested on Tuesday, was posted at the RAK Marg police station in Central Mumbai. The complainant is a 40-year-old motor mechanic whose mobile phone is worth Rs 9,000.
The complainant had approached the police on January 4 after his phone was stolen. At the police station, officer Navle allegedly refused to register an FIR stating he would instead register a missing complaint. When the complainant went again on January 10, Navle allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 as bribe and later brought it down to Rs 2,000 as bribe to register the FIR.
The complainant approached the ACB, informing them on number 1064. The allegation was verified and an FIR was registered against Navle. He was arrested on Tuesday and produced before a special ACB court, which remanded him to police custody for a day. A house search was conducted at his residence in Navi Mumbai but nothing suspicious was found.
