While Hyderabad University has turned into a virtual battlefield with students protesting the suicide of dalit research scholar, Rohith Vemula, there is nationwide outrage over his death.

In Mumbai, followers of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s ideology, groups of Republican Party and Nationalist Congress Party protested the incident while RPI demanded a CBI probe into the matter. Students of Mumbai University joined the nationwide protest to express solidarity with Rohith.

RPI leader Ramdas Athawale, who will be visiting Rohith’s family in Hyderabad tomorrow, demanded a CBI probe while speaking to mediapersons at Y.B. Chavan Pratishathan on Tuesday. “The death of the Dalit scholar is shocking and the whole matter should be probed by CBI. Local investigation agency could not find out the truth. I will visit Hyderabad on Wednesday and will meet Rohit’s family,” he said.

Students of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune went on a day-long hunger strike to express solidarity with the protest. -"We are in solidarity with students protesting the death of Rohith, and as many as eight students from FTII have sat on a hunger strike for a day,” said FTII Students' Association President Harishankar Nachimuthu.

Congress Mumbai President Sanjay Nirupam criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said, “While the Dalit student is committing suicide, our ‘Prachar Mantri’ is busy in election campaigns and showing off.”

Congress MLC Sanjay Dutt said, “PM Modi’s minister is responsible for the Dalit scholar’s suicide. In fact, it is a cold-blooded murder.”

Congress activists protested the atrocities of the BJP government and Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya. Activists burnt posters of Mr Dattatreya and demanded his resignation.
