The prosecution in the case involving the June 2011 murder of senior city-based journalist J. Dey on Friday concluded its arguments on the framing of charges against deported gangster Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan. The court then adjourned and deferred the matter till August 31, when the defence would be heard on the issue of the framing of charges.
Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) counsel Bharat Badami on Friday told the court that the agency has enough evidence against Rajan to prove that Mr Dey was killed at his insistence and that he hatched a criminal conspiracy for the same and ordered the execution of murder.
The court also disposed of an application filed by Rajan seeking the CD containing the intercepted call records between him and other accused.
Special judge Sameer Adkar, while disposing of the application, said the CD would be provided to the accused when the prosecution would state that it is relying on it during the trial.
The CBI, in its supplementary chargesheet recently filed against Rajan, has said that the reason behind the murder was that Mr Dey had written a few news articles that showed Rajan in a poor light. There was also a book titled “Chindi – Rags to Riches” that Mr Dey was writing. In this book, which was almost ready for publishing, Mr Dey had written a story on the life of 20 criminals who were small-time criminals but later became big names in the underworld. Rajan was one of them.
