Taking suo moto cognisance of a recent viral video recorded at Kandivali police station where a police official was seen allegedly beating a couple that had come to file a complaint, the Maharashtra human rights commission on Thursday directed the zonal DCP of the area to inquire into the matter and file a reply in four weeks. The MHRC wrote a letter to the DCP to this effect.

The suo moto cognisance was taken by the chairperson of the commission, said a source. A video clip had gone viral earlier last week on social networking sites, in which a police official attached to the Kandivali police station was seen allegedly beating a couple. The video was recorded by one Rakesh Shetty, who wrote a letter to the Kandivali police station and commissioner of police on May 21, to complain about the incident.

According to an MHRC official, a suo-motto case was registered on the basis of the video. The official said as per the video, the way the complainants were beaten up is a violation of their human rights.

The commission has asked for a report of the incident from the zonal DCP (zone 11) of the area.

“The commission will decide about further action on the incident only after the report,” said an official.

Investigation into the case is pending as ACP Sudhakar Pujari, who is heading the probe into the incident, went on a four-day leave. When approached, a senior police official said that investigation into the incident is on, and the police is in the process of verifying all the facts. Meanwhile, the statement of Rakesh Shetty, the main eye-witness, had not been recorded till Thursday evening. Talking to The Asian Age, Mr Shetty said he was surprised over not being summoned to record his statement and feared authorities are delaying action in the case unnecessarily.
