The state government, under fire for its failure to control malnutrition deaths, has decided to rope in private hospitals to curb such incidents in tribal areas of the state, especially in Palghar district.

Under the move, teams from private hospitals in the city will visit identified villages twice a week to conduct thorough check-ups and also spread awareness among pregnant women and children about food habits and other measures to prevent malnutrition.

“Private hospitals and teams of experts from Mumbai and Thane will visit hospitals in neighbouring Palghar that reported deaths of infants and children recently due to malnutrition. Currently, hospitals from Mumbai and Thane have been selected and details of malnutrition-hit tehsils are shared with their management. The government will bear expenses of medicines and ensure food grain supply,” said health minister Deepak Sawant.

Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children, Jaslok hospital, Global hospitals and Surya Mother and Child care are some of the hospitals roped in for Palghar under this move.
