Priest held for sexual assault, blackmail of woman

A 35-year-old Jain temple priest has been arrested by the Gamdevi police for allegedly repeatedly drugging a woman, clicking her nude photographs, and sexually assaulting her. The police arrested the accused when the woman narrated her ordeal to them. Police officials said the 37-year-old woman had approached the priest two years ago as she could not conceive.

Soon after, he suggested she enter into a relationship with him. The woman refused but the priest offered her some prasad which he had drugged. As soon as she fell unconscious, he allegedly took her to his room near the temple premises and stripped her naked to take photographs.

An officer from the Gamdevi police station said, “The accused kept committing this crime between 2013 and 2016 and later, showed the woman her pictures to blackmail her about circulating them to the public on an Internet-based cellphone messenger.” For three years, the priest kept molesting and blackmailing the woman. Unable to take it any longer, she told her husband a few days ago, after which the priest allegedly assaulted and abused her.

The police arrested Prem Singh Parmar on Tuesday after the woman, a Gamdevi resident, along with her husband, lodged a complaint. Parmar is a priest at a Jain temple located at Cotton Green. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. He has been remanded to police custody.
