Actor Rahul Raj Singh, on Wednesday filed an anticipatory bail application at the Dindoshi sessions court. This move came a day after Singh was booked for assaulting and abetting the suicide of TV actress and girlfriend Pratyusha Banerjee.
The actor’s new lawyer Ashok Sarogi moved the application and pleaded for the case to be heard on the same day, but the court adjourned the hearing for Thursday.
Mr Sarogi came into the picture, after Rahul’s previous lawyer Neeraj Gupta withdrew from the case early on Wednesday morning. In his statement, he claimed that Rahul had kept him in the dark about crucial details about the case. Advocate Gupta is known to have said that Rahul had not been forthcoming and he had become aware of many important facets about Rahul and Pratyusha’s life through the media and news reports.
On Tuesday, Pratyusha’s mother filed an FIR against Rahul alleging that he used to torture Pratyusha and also assault her on occasions. The Bangur Nagar police booked Rahul for abetment of suicide under section 306, 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Rahul who is currently admitted to a local hospital is said to be suffering from blood pressure issues, anxiety and depression. Sources in the Bangur Nagar police department said that they were monitoring his condition strictly. “After the FIR was registered, we have posted police personnel outside his ward and also on the premises of the hospital. This is so he cannot escape or even leave till the due process of the law is complete,” said a senior officer at the Bangur Nagar police station.
Revealing details about the ongoing investigation, the officer said that they had interrogated the house help employed by Rahul and Pratyusha. Not divulging the name of the domestic help, the officer said that she was a full time employee and used to live with the couple in the same house. “She has revealed that Rahul would beat Pratyusha on a regular basis. And also they would have a lot of arguments and Rahul would assault her verbally too,” said the officer. He added that they were still investigating the matter to check if they had some other issues. Sources inform that the police is trying to ascertain whether Rahul was in a relationship with somebody else too and whether this could have caused a rift between the couple.
